Taking attendance and parent calls off a school's front desk
Camera-based attendance, automated calls to parents of absent students and a live view of the campus for the principal's office.
The problem
Every morning, teachers took attendance on paper and the front office rang the parents of every absent child one by one. By the time the principal had a picture of the day, the day was half over.
How we went about it
- 1Before designing anything, we sat with the principal, two class teachers and the front-office staff and wrote down what each of them did between 7:30 and 10:00.
- 2We split the work into three phases so the school could use attendance and parent calls while the bigger analytics features were still being built.
- 3Consent, data minimisation and retention rules were agreed with the school up front, in line with India's DPDP Act.
What we built
- Face-recognition attendance from classroom cameras, feeding a live register
- Automated voice calls to parents of absent students, with every call and reply logged
- Engagement and behaviour views for class teachers
- A check-in module for parent-teacher meetings
- A dashboard for the principal's office
Where it landed
When it's fully live, attendance and parent calls run on their own and leave a record, and the principal can see the whole campus on one screen before first break. Each phase is useful by itself, so the school isn't waiting on the last one.
